US National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Funding

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Funding Program also known as NEVI in short was established after the federal infrastructure investment and jobs act was signed into law. NEVI aims to provide states with adequate capital to set up electric vehicle fast chargers in selected areas.

Why NEVI is important

The setting up of EV chargers in different states is aimed at forming a large network of interconnected EV charging network across the United States. Funding of NEVI is designated to alternative fuel corridors for electric vehicles with the aim of building a national network along the Interstate Highway System. Ten percent of the NEVI funding is set aside annually for the secretary of transportation so as to provide discretionary grants to help fill any gaps within the national network.

State agencies are not allowed to own, operate, or maintain the charging infrastructure through the NEVI program, rather the funding is used to set up infrastructure across the state. A federal guidance sets out the necessary rules that are to be adhered to such as the distance between EV chargers and how accessible EV chargers are to drivers. The amount of NEVI funding offered to states varies from state to state. For instance, Wyoming is allocated $3.9 million in 2022 and expects to receive around $5 million annually.

The NEVI project is valued at $5 billion and is aimed at helping the U.S to reduce climate change due to greenhouse emissions. California which leads in number of EV chargers installed has the California Department of Transportation which is mandated to take charge of the NEVI project with the CEC being the designated state energy partner. According to the California Energy Commission, the two have joined efforts to create the California Deployment Plan for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure that elaborates how California aims to distribute $384 million allocated for the NEVI program.
